Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) administers highway transportation activities including standards development, research and technology, training, technical assistance, highway access to federally owned lands and Indian lands, and commercial vehicle safety enforcement. FHWA also works with the individual states for development and maintenance of state and local transportation systems as elements of the national intermodal transportation system.

The FHWA also has useful information on highway safety procedures and technology as well as the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on its website.

Highway Statistics Series manuals are available for download as well which are used by the US government to maintain financing information for various states and to track usage and the number of vehicles used in the nation. This is the same statistical data used for policy makers for transportation issues.
